Wheelchair Basketball & Tennis

Basketball

  • Wednesdays, 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.
  • September - March
  • Ages 16 years and older
  • Located at the NFL YET Center, 7090 NW 22 Ave.

Team practice for the Miami Heat Wheels wheelchair basketball team as well as skill development for novice players. This program is free and is funded by the Leisure Access Foundation. Limited basketball wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Advanced registration is required. Call 305-380-9106 for more information.

Tennis

  • Saturdays, 9:00 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.,
  • year-round 
  • Ages 16 years and older 
  • Located in the Tamiami Park tennis center

Wheelchair tennis instruction from a tennis pro. This program is free and is funded by the Leisure Access Foundation. Limited tennis wheelchairs are available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Advanced registration is required. Call 305-380-9106 for more information.

Handcycling

Hand-propelled cycles for individuals who are unable to maintain balance on or pedal a typical bicycle. Families are welcomed to bring their own bikes and participate. There is no fee for this program. Must call in advance to reserve a handcyle. Call 954-815-6289 for more information.

Jr. Paralympic Sports Club

  • Saturdays, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., September - April
  • Ages 9-18
  • Located in Camp Matecumbe  

Active games, SPARK activities, and rotating sports for youth who have a physical or visual disability. $40 for 8 sessions. Advanced registration is required. Call 305-234-1673 for more information.

Boccia Clinics

  • Thursdays 10 a.m. – noon, dates an locations TBD
  • All ages 

Adapted Bocce clinics for individuals who have physical disabilities. Ideal for individuals who use power wheelchairs. Advanced registration is required. Call 305-234-1673 for more information.

Goalball

  • Saturdays, 2 - 4 p.m., September-April
  • Ages 16 years and older 
  • NFL YET Center, 7090 NW 22 Ave

A sport for individuals who are blind or visually impaired. Team practice for the South Florida Rage Goalball team as well as skill development  for novice players. This program is free and is funded by the Leisure Access Foundation. Advanced registration is required. Call 305-234-1673 for more information.

Swimming Lessons & Fitness Swim

Learn to swim classes in group and individual settings. $40 for 8 group sessions or $150 for 8 individual lessons. Advanced registration is required. Call 305-752-4966 for more information.

Fitness Swim

Lap swimming for fun and exercise for adults 18+ with physical disabilities. Program is every Wednesday & Friday from 11 a.m. - 12 p.m. September through May. The cost is $40.00 per group of 10 or $150.00 for 10 individual classes.

This program takes place at A.D. Barnes Park. For more information, call Belinda Phillips at 305-755-7848.

The Paralympic Experience

A one-day event held every March that highlights various Paralympic and adapted sports. Participants will have the opportunity to try first-hand, various sports and utilize equipment necessary for participation in the sports and will also have the opportunity to meet with local Paralympians, athletes, and coaches. The event is free.  For more information or for sponsorship opportunities please call 305-234-1673.

The Parks Disability Services and Achilles International Annual Omnium
A one-day event held every January in which participants and their family members have the opportunity to participate in three separate events such as a timed 1-mile handcyling/cycling run, a distance run/walk/roll, and a wheelchair obstacle course (slalom). Qualifying times will be submitted for those interested in competing in marathons. This event is all-inclusive and friends and family members are encouraged to participate in events as well. The event is free.  For more information or for sponsorship opportunities, please call 305-234-1673.
