As part of a larger initiative to make fitness fun, convenient and free for Miami-Dade County residents, the Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation & Open Spaces Department in partnership with The Trust for Public Land has installed new outdoor Fitness Zones® in its parks.
Fitness Zones® are comprised of exercise equipment permanently placed in a select area of a park designed for exercise, which make it easier for residents of all ages to include a fitness regimen in their daily routine to stem off heart disease, obesity and other ailments, as well to live an overall healthy lifestyle.
"Leveraging our parks to create a healthier Miami-Dade County is an initiative that I'm very excited about," said Mayor Gimenez. "We are serious about improving quality-of-life in our community, and our new Fitness Zones® are one illustration of how Miami-Dade County parks are benefiting residents of all ages - from infants to seniors."

With one in four Floridians classified as obese and at risk for heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and depression, the time is now to take action for prevention, said Brenda McClymonds, TPL's senior program director. The Trust for Public Land is proud to partner with the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department to create more opportunities for physical activity by outfitting neighborhood parks with Fitness Zones®, because they are consistently developing programming and parks designed to improve the health of South Florida residents. Their passion for the health and well being of park users and residents is tangible, and it's having a positive impact.
Miami-Dade County Fitness Zones are further complemented by other fitness oriented amenities located at its parks throughout the County, including vita courses, which are exercise trails with fitness/exercise elements along a pathway that can also be used for walking, running or skating.
Parks Partnerships for Fitness
Miami-Dade Parks' ''Partnerships for Fitness'' program also includes the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) as a partner. Communities Putting Prevention to Work (CPPW) is a locally driven CDC initiative supporting 50 communities, including Miami-Dade County, to promote physical activity and tackle obesity-a leading preventable cause of death and disability in the United States. CPPW has also assisted with funding for Fitness Zone® at A.D. Barnes Park, Gwen Cherry Park, Jefferson Reaves Sr. Park, and South Dade Park.
''There are plenty of distractions and obstacles preventing people from exercising, whether it's too much passive entertainment like watching television or being unable to afford a gym membership or thinking exercise is too difficult,'' said Miami-Dade Parks Director Jack Kardys. ''At Miami-Dade Parks we're striving to change attitudes and behavior by making fitness fun and convenient for all residents, and installing what are essentially free outdoor gyms at our parks is just one way that we're achieving our goal. It's another way of inviting residents to ''Live A Parklife,'' which is a lifestyle that includes outdoor recreation for fitness and good health.''
