Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP)
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) acts as a clearinghouse to provide opportunities for persons 55 years of age and older to use their talents, skills and experiences to enrich the lives of others in meaningful ways. RSVP offers recognition and insurance coverage to everyone enrolled, transportation reimbursement, and meals are provided in some cases. Over 1,000 RSVP volunteers serve in 79 agencies and organizations throughout Miami-Dade County.
The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program began nationally in 1971 under the auspices of ACTION, “the Federal Domestic Volunteer Agency”, and in 1993, the Corporation for National and Community Service was created to give opportunities to millions of Americans to improve lives, strengthen communities and foster civic engagement through service and volunteering. The Corporation for National and Community Service organizes the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program into the Senior Corps stream of service.
The County has operated the program for the past 33 years servicing annually 500 older adults (55+) providing volunteer opportunities at 22 partnering sites throughout Miami-Dade County at nonprofit organizations and/or health proprietors at a minimum of four hours weekly. Current grant is funded as of July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013.
Enrolled volunteers are provided with incentives to include accident and personal liability insurance, travel reimbursement and Annual Recognition. A volunteer claiming travel reimbursement must provide a minimum of 48 hours of service within the reporting quarter and the limit for reimbursement is thirty dollars quarterly. Travel reimbursement is .20 per mile.
Volunteers and partnering sites are reflected in the grant’s work plan to provide service in the following areas: Other Education, Community-Based Volunteer Programs, Congregate Meals, Hospital and Clinical Support Services including Rehabilitation and Hospice/Terminally Ill.
