Firebush or Butterfly Bush (Hamelia patens var. patens)

picture of firebush or butterfly bushDescription: Moderate-growing evergreen tree with a dense, columnar canopy producing red flowers throughout the year and attracts butterflies. Native. Fruits ripen in late summer/fall and attract birds.

Size: Small (10-12 feet in height) 

Location: Plant at least 20 feet from power lines and 10-16 feet from your house. Full sun with well-drained soil.

Salt tolerance: Low

Watering: Water during planting and for one year thereafter.  May need  water if under drought conditions.

Pruning: Wait one year to prune. If staked, remove after 6 months.
