Green Business

Many businesses in Miami-Dade County have taken steps to incorporate sustainable practices into their operations, therefore improving performance and achieving operational cost savings. Some benefits to greening business operations include:

  • 15-30% savings on cleaning costs
  • 35% in energy savings
  • 20-60% in water savings

Until now, customers have had no way of recognizing which businesses are going green. So Miami-Dade County has developed the Green Business Certification Program in order to recognize green businesses in our community.

Join a growing number of businesses that are improving the local economy, environment and quality of life, while saving money.

Green Business Resources

Miami-Dade has developed Green Business Resources to help businesses go above and beyond basic green measures. Check out our checklists and resources guides to assist with the energy, water and waste-reduction goals of your business. Also check out these tips for ideas and ways to green your business.

Green Lodging Program

Miami-Dade County has partnered with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Green Lodging Program to assist local hotels in obtaining their State of Florida Green Lodging Designation. Many Miami-Dade hotels have received this designation and you can find them by using this green lodging map.

Miami-Dade County hotels that have received the State of Florida Green Lodging Designation qualify for the Green Business Certification. The state’s designation will meet the requirements of the County’s certification. Florida Green Lodging-designated hotels are encouraged to contact the Green Business Program at and request additional information on how to obtain the certification.

The program’s environmental guidelines allow the hospitality industry to evaluate its operations, set goals and take specific actions to continuously improve environmental performance. Green Lodging Tips  provide information on ways to green a hotel.

Recycling used equipment

Miami-Dade businesses are encouraged to replace inefficient appliances with ENERGY STAR-qualified products

Recycle or dispose of old appliances or select equipment according to federal and state laws and regulations. Ensure, and provide proof, the old appliance is not resold or put back into service.

Refer to the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) list of companies  that de-manufacture and recycle televisions, computers and other electronic equipment. By providing this list, DEP and Miami-Dade County do not endorse specific equipment or companies.
