Cargo on the rise

In 2011, PortMiami's total cargo tonnage increased 10 percent and annual TEUs (twenty equivalent units) increased 6.5 percent.
Cargo Facts

Known as the Cargo Gateway of the Americas, more than a dozen of the world’s top shipping lines call on PortMiami.  In 2012, PortMiami's total TEUs (Twenty-foot Equivalent Units) were just under one million, a modest increase over the previous year.  Since 2009, the Port's cargo traffic has increased a little more than 13% and this growth is expected to continue as infrastructure improvements like the Deep Dredge and the Intermodal / Freight Rail Restoration come online.  PortMiami hopes to double its cargo throughput before the end of the decade.

Total Trade by Region*

Latin America and the Caribbean make up PortMiami’s largest trade region. PortMiami is constantly working on maintaining and strengthening trade with these and other regions worldwide. With the Deep Dredge Project set to be completed in early 2015, trade with Asia will increase as PortMiami benefits from a shift in trade from West Coast to East Coast ports.

Pie chart showing PortMiami trade by region. Latin America and the Caribbean represent 54.2% of our total trade.
