Deering Harvester Day
Celebrate the coming of fall at Deering Estate on October 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Enjoy family activities, historic house tours, and a natural areas tour. General admission is $12 for adults and $7 for children (ages 4-14).
Kitetoberfest at Haulover Park
Kites of all colors, shapes, sizes and themes will be sent soaring in the skies over Haulover Beach Park on Sunday, October 18, 2015, from 12-5 p.m., during the 23rd annual "Kitetoberfest" kite festival. This family-style event, presented by the Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces Department and Skyward Kites, will feature free kiting activities for all ages. Event attendees may wish to bring their own kite, make one for free at the event, or purchase an already-made kite from the on-site kite store. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase. Event admission is free and parking is $7.
Miami-Dade Parks receives Florida APD Employment Excellence Award
Parks Disability Services Manager Lucy Binhack and Recreation Therapist Gisel Prado met Florida Agency for Persons with Disabilities (APD) Director, Barbara Palmer and City of Tallahassee's Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Coordinator, Kathleen Wright in Tallahassee to receive the APD Employment Excellence Award for the Transition Project Internship Program. The plaque was presented to Miami-Dade Parks October 7 in Tallahassee by APD for Excellence in employing persons with disabilities.
Nominate an outstanding woman
Nominations are now being accepted for the 28th Annual In the Company of Women Awards Ceremony, presented by Macy's. Deadline to submit a nomination is Oct. 16.
Winners will be awarded at the ceremony on March 3, 2016, at the Coral Gables Country Club.
Divers with disabilities gain a sense of freedom
Veterans, adults and youth ages 10+ with disabilities will have an opportunity to escape gravity for a brief time and scuba dive with a certified scuba diving volunteer on Oct. 17 from 11 a.m.-3 p.m., at A.D. Barnes Pool.

Good health may be linked to nature
According to Ming Kuo, the Director of the Landscape and Human Health Laboratory at the University of Illinois, there is a correlation between nature health and our immune system. Kuo states that nature acts like a multivitamin for the body and our immune system plays a significant role in every one of the diseases that nature protects against.
Free Healthy Choices Clinics for Active Adults
Healthy Choices Clinics by Walgreens is a collaboration between Miami-Dade Parks Recreation and Open Spaces and Walgreens which provides local clinics where Active Older Adults, 55 and over, can receive Blood Pressure, Glucose and Cholesterol Screenings and immunizations for Flu, Pneumonia and Shingles.
