Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness Program
Over the last three years, Miami-Dade County and The Coca-Cola Troops for Fitness Program has hired 13 veterans and has impacted over 30,000 community members. Our goal has been to lead boot camp classes using our outdoor fitness zones located throughout Miami-Dade Parks. The Troops for Fitness initiative managed by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA), has received an extension of the grant from The Coca-Cola Foundation. The grant has supported our nutrition and physical activity programs offered throughout the county's 13 recreation community centers.
Among the first veterans hired by Miami-Dade Parks is Laura Ortiz, an amputee who served in the Army National Guard for eight years. Ortiz has received both Gold and Silver medals in U.S. Paralympic track events. She has served as a fitness program coordinator and instructor. Amongst the first veterans issued a Parks’ permit to run a Boot Camp for profit is Ian Cummings, a U.S. Coast Guard veteran who operates boot-camp style classes at Deerwood Bonita Lakes Park and Tropical Park.
Miami-Dade Parks will continue to hire local veterans, whose discipline, leadership skills and passion for the greater good make them the perfect candidates for the job. If you or anyone you know is a veteran, please contact Laura Ortiz at OrtizLa@miamidade.gov or call 305-694-2728.
