Nicole Tallman - Poet Laureate

On April 1, 2026, Nicole Tallman was appointed the third Poet Laureate in County history by Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava.

Prior to serving as Miami-Dade’s third Poet Laureate, Nicole served as the Poetry Ambassador for Miami-Dade County for five years. As Poetry Ambassador, Nicole created the County's very first Poet Laureate program and worked to celebrate and elevate poetry and poets, connect community, and promote literacy. She led two collaborative Heroic Sonnet Crown Projects for the Mayor and residents of Miami-Dade County, placed poems by local poets on public transit and at Miami International Airport and PortMiami during National Poetry Month, and provided essential leadership, support and vision for Inaugural Poet Laureate Richard Blanco’s Miami’s Favorite Poems Project and Second Poet Laureate Caridad Moro-Gronlier’s Generation 305 project, along with creating and hosting the Lunchtime Poetry & Jazz Series at Miami-Dade County’s Main Library, and serving as a volunteer poetry and interviews editor for South Florida Poetry Journal and The Blue Mountain Review, and on the volunteer Advisory Board of SWWIM (Supporting Women Writers in Miami). She also created the Redacted Books Series, selecting and editing manuscripts from marginalized writers for publication, and the Be Well Reading Series, connecting poets across the globe and giving voice and platform to poets launching new books. Nicole currently volunteers as a poetry and interviews editor for South Florida Poetry Journal, as an advisory board member for SWWIM, and as an editor and communications director for JackLeg Press. She is the author of four poetry collections and a collaborative novel. Nicole’s next poetry collection, The Velvet Room, is forthcoming in April 2027.
