Learn how to stay safe during snakebite season

          Eastern Coral Snake

Each year from April to October the number of reported snakebites peaks due to warmer temperatures.

Our Venom One Unit has released a video offering suggestions on how to stay safe around snakes.

South Florida is home to 47 species of snakes, but there are only four venomous snakes that are seen in South Florida:

          • Coral Snake
          • Eastern Diamond Back Rattlesnake
          • Dusky Pigmy Rattlesnake
          • Cottonmouth (Water Moccasin)

Venom One was the first fire department-based antivenin bank in the country and is often called on when there is a poisonous snakebite in Florida.

Important tips to keep in mind to help people to stay safe during snakebite season:

          • Snakes often won't bite if they are left alone.
          • Snakes tend to be more active first thing in the morning and at night.
          • Stay away from tall grass and piles of leaves when possible.
          • Do not walk around outdoors without shoes.
          • If bitten by a snake, keep that area level and still.
          • Do not try to capture the snake.
          • Try to remember what the snake looked like -- size, shape and color. Take a picture if it is safe to take one.
          • Do not try to suck out the poison or put ice on the area.
          • Call 911 as soon as possible if someone is bitten.
