Tackle waste at the Super Bowl

With the upcoming Super Bowl taking place in Miami, the Miami-Dade County Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) is poised to play a major role in the NFL in a "Zero Waste to landfill" effort to leave a positive green legacy after the big event.

Our “Nothing Goes to Waste” campaign makes sure most waste managed by DSWM stays out of landfills. In fact, most waste in Miami-Dade County is converted into energy at our Resources Recovery Facility.

Miami-Dade County will take a portion of the post-recycling material or waste that could not be recycled from the Super Bowl Live Fan Fest, the NFL Experience and the Super Bowl LIV and convert it from waste to energy. This process is beneficial in producing renewable energy.

Past estimates show that approximately 40 tons of waste can be produced at a Super Bowl. At the DSWM Resources Recovery Facility, this could be converted into approximately 15 megawatts of electrical energy.

So regardless of who scores more touchdowns during the Super Bowl, Miami-Dade County’s environment will be a winner.
