The restoration of the Matheson Hammock Park atoll pool, which was damaged from Hurricane Irma in 2017, is complete and ready for use. The improvements are designed to strengthen its resilience against future storm and flood events, as well as to ensure community enjoyment for years to come.
The project included dredging the atoll pool and the repair and replacement of the pool’s three culverts, interior retaining wall, stone breaker wall and paved pedestrian walkway. The improvements will improve pedestrian access to the park and are aligned with sea level rise recommendations.
The atoll pool is located within the 462-acre Matheson Hammock Park, a regional and heritage park acquired in 1931 and named for Miami-Dade pioneer W.J. Matheson. The park is recognized by the County for its historical significance as its first park and is flushed naturally with the tidal action of nearby Biscayne Bay. It holds some of the most precious and singular resources within Miami-Dade County’s parks system. The park houses a full-service marina, snack bar and restaurant built into an historic coral rock building, picnic pavilions, a scenic lake and nature trails.
The project was completed by Miami-Dade Parks Design and Build team working in conjunction with MAC 195 Engineering Corp. Inc. Funding was provided by FEMA.
