Stay cool to beat the heat safely

As South Florida experiences its typical heat along with above-normal temperatures during periods of extreme heat, residents are urged to practice heat safety. In the United States, heat waves kill more people each year than any other weather-related disaster combined, and can quickly lead to dehydration, heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
Older adults, young children, and individuals with chronic medical conditions are most at risk. Children and pets should never be left in parked cars, even for a short time, since temperatures can rise dangerously fast.
Simple precautions can significantly help in beating the heat, such as staying hydrated, avoiding outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and wearing loose, light-colored clothes.
