Noted author and law school professor Kristin Henning headlines MDEAT Speaks “The Rage of Innocence: How America Criminalizes Black Youth”
For many people of color, daily surveillance and discriminatory encounters with police are overwhelming and traumatic. Unfortunately, Black youth are not spared from these occurrences. In a proactive response to the disproportionate mental illness and trauma experienced by Black youth, Miami-Dade Economic Advocacy Trust (MDEAT) is presenting its fourth MDEAT Speaks empowerment series featuring noted author and law school professor Kristin Henning. MDEAT Speaks “The Rage of Innocence: How America Criminalizes Black Youth” is scheduled for Tuesday, May 23, at 6 p.m. at Ampersand Studios, located at 31 N.E. 17th Street near Downtown Miami. Free registration and additional information can be found online at www.bit.ly/MDEATevents.
“MDEAT is committed to ensuring Black residents participate in Miami-Dade County’s economic growth. We cannot achieve or sustain economic growth without our children. Too many of our children are getting arrested across the country,” said William “Bill” Diggs, MDEAT’s executive director. “We will never be comfortable with those circumstances. We deserve a prosperous future, and so do our children.”
Professor Henning is the Blume Professor of Law and Director of the Juvenile Justice Clinic and Initiative at Georgetown Law. She supervises law students and represents children arrested in Washington, D.C. Henning’s twenty-five years of juvenile court inspired her to confront America’s irrational and manufactured fears of Black youth. The Yale Law School graduate makes a compelling case that the nation’s obsession with policing and incarcerating Black America begins with Black children.
“We are pleased to bring Professor Henning to Miami-Dade County to give us a national perspective on the devastating and long-term impact of racial bias and over-policing of children of color,” Diggs continued. “We invite the greater community to help us cultivate solutions to help us create the inclusive and sustainable future Miami-Dade County deserves.”
