PortMiami receives award from North American Marine Environment Protection Association
PortMiami has been honored by the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA) with the 2023 Marine Environment Protection Award in the ports category. The award will be presented at NAMEPA’s Annual Conference and Awards Dinner on November 2, 2023, at SUNY Maritime College.
“Congratulations to PortMiami on receiving this prestigious award for its sustainability practices and initiatives,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “I also want to thank the North American Marine Environment Protection Association for recognizing the County’s pledge to safeguarding our environment for generations to come.”
NAMEPA’s Marine Environment Protection Awards began in 2008 in recognition of an individual or organization’s innovative and extraordinary effort to commit themselves to preserving the marine environment as exemplified by a commitment to programs which have specific objectives set for environmental performance and improvement. The categories are Non-Profit, Education, Environmental, Government Agency, Individual, Industry, Port, and Seafarer Welfare.
“We are committed to being a sustainable global gateway,” said Hydi Webb, PortMiami Director and CEO. “We thank our Mayor, County Commissioners, and cruise and cargo partners for their continued support of our resilience initiatives.”
PortMiami is surrounded by a natural environment that includes sea grass and marine life, which is why the Port will continue investing in green initiatives to protect these resources. Amidst the Port’s mitigation projects are the successful outplant of 10,000 Acropora (staghorn) coral colonies to natural reef systems both north and south of Government Cut through a grant with the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science; 16.6 acres of seagrass restoration north of the Julia Tuttle Causeway in Biscayne Bay; and Oleta River State Park mangrove wetland restoration project, which restored over 42.5 acres and enhanced approximately 20 acres of mangrove habitat.
Among PortMiami’s recent sustainable projects are 13 all-electric gantry cranes, which replaced diesel powered equipment; 12 electric Rubber-Tired Gantries (eRTGs) in the South Florida Container Terminal cargo yard, which reduces carbon dioxide emissions by 20 percent; Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) System, which helps identify when a container enters a cargo terminal, communicates that to the eRTG in the terminal, and leads to a decrease in idling time of transport trucks; Facial Biometrics System, which expedites the debarkation process and was implemented in collaboration with U.S. Customs and Border Protection; and Building Management Systems which monitor the use of electricity in cruise terminals and parking garages. All garages now have LED lights and motion sensors, which use a fraction of electricity.
Additionally, the port is finalizing its Shore Power Program, a partnership between PortMiami, its cruise partners (Carnival Corporation, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean Group, and Virgin Voyages) and Florida Power and Light Company. Upon completion, shore power capability will be available at five cruise terminals with the ability to plug in three ships at a time. Shore power will allow a cruise ship to turn off their primary engines while docked, resulting in reduced air emissions.
