Miami-Dade Animal Services commemorates National Pet Poison Prevention Week with safety tips for pet owners
In commemoration of National Pet Poison Prevention Week, which is celebrated from March 17th to March 23rd, Miami-Dade County Animal Services (Animal Services) urges pet owners to take proactive steps in safeguarding their furry friends from potential dangers in their environment. This annual observance serves as a critical reminder for pet parents to pet proof their homes and protect their pets from common household hazards such as certain foods, plants, medications, and chemicals that can pose significant risks and can even be potentially lethal to our pets if ingested. To prevent accidental poisoning, Animal Services advises pet owners to:
• Store medications, cleaning products, and chemicals out of reach of pets.
• Keep toxic foods such as chocolate, grapes, onions, caffeine, and xylitol-containing products like gum, toothpaste, and baked goods, away from pets.
• Be cautious with houseplants, as some varieties can be toxic to animals.
• Recognize the signs of poisoning, including vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, and difficulty breathing, and seek immediate veterinary care if ingestion is suspected.
“During National Pet Poison Prevention Week, we remind our county’s pet owners that it’s essential for pet owners to be vigilant in identifying and eliminating potential toxins from their homes,” said Annette Jose, Animal Services Director. “Our pets rely on us to keep them safe, and by taking precautionary measures, we can help ensure their well-being and avoid costly and preventable medical expenses or heartbreaking tragedies.”
Animal Services encourages pet owners to stay informed about potential hazards and take proactive steps to protect their pets’ health and safety year-round.
