Florida State historical marker to be unveiled at Chapman Field Park
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, alongside Miami-Dade Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces, and in partnership with the Miami Military Museum, will host an unveiling on Monday, April 22, 2024, at 11 a.m., for the newly installed, state-approved historical marker at Chapman Field Park, 13601 Deering Bay Drive, Coral Gables, FL 33158.
This event will be dedicated to both American hero Victor Emanuel Chapman and to its namesake Chapman Field, a Miami-Dade County Park. During World War One, on June 24, 1916, Chapman was serving in the heroic French Lafeyette Escadrille composed of volunteer American pilots. In aerial combat over Verdun Chapman was killed-in-action, the first American aviator to sacrifice his life in the Great War.
Subsequently the US Army Air Service created Chapman Army Airfield for military aviation training. Chapman Field was a military base until the end of WWII. Aviatrix of the Women’s Air Service Pilots (WASPS) were instrumental in training military pilots.
Today, Chapman Field Park enjoys a host of public sports activities, exhibits concerning this storied lineage, as well as quieter reflection within nature at this beautiful park.
