Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office Deputy Involved Shooting
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is conducting an investigation into a deputy-involved shooting involving a Miami-Dade Sheriff’s Office (MDSO) Robbery Intervention Detail (RID) detective.
According to investigators at approximately 5:15 p.m., RID deputies initiated a traffic stop on a yellow vehicle in the area of NW 62nd Street and NW 22nd Avenue due to illegal window tints. The driver fled from the deputies, and the MDSO Aviation Support Unit responded, providing real time updates to ground units on the vehicle’s location.
The vehicle ultimately entered an apartment complex near NW 4th Court and NW 85th Street Road. The driver exited the vehicle while armed and advanced toward the deputies’ vehicle. An MDSO deputy discharged his service weapon, striking the subject.
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue responded and pronounced the individual deceased at the scene. The deceased male was the sole occupant of the vehicle. No deputies were injured during the incident.
The deputy involved has been identified as Deputy Kelvin Cox, with a 23-year tenure, and this investigation remains ongoing.

While a thorough investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is still underway, releasing this footage ensures everyone sees the sequence of events as they unfolded.
Regardless of the outcome, my commitment is clear, to be transparent with our community, to hold ourselves to the highest standards, and to continue working every day to earn and maintain your trust.
