Mayor Daniella Levine Cava releases a statement about Supreme Court’s ruling on birthright citizenship

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava released the following statement on the Supreme Court’s ruling on birthright citizenship:  

“Today’s U.S. Supreme Court decision takes a wrecking ball to the fundamental value long held in our nation that if you are born in the United States of America, you are by birth a U.S. citizen. The ruling further opens the door to dangerous uncertainty for countless families in our community and across the country. For over 125 years, the right to citizenship at birth has been a bedrock principle of our nation and that rings especially true for our community. Miami-Dade County is a place built by immigrants, where people from across the globe come seeking freedom from oppression and the opportunity for a new start. The idea that a child born in the United States could be denied citizenship simply because of who their parents are strikes at the heart of our American values and our democratic ideals.  

“As Mayor of one of the most diverse counties in the United States, I will continue to forcefully speak out against these dangerous precedents and erosion of our rights by our federal government, and will proudly defend the democratic principles that make our nation strong.”
