Mayor Daniella Levine Cava to Host Biscayne Bay Science Roundtable, Five Years After Fish Kill
Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava will host a virtual Biscayne Bay Science Roundtable on Wednesday, August 27, bringing together top scientists to assess the Bay’s health five years after the 2020 fish kill.
Biscayne Bay is one of Miami-Dade’s most treasured natural resources — vital to our economy, environment, and quality of life. The roundtable will highlight key scientific findings, major accomplishments in restoration and protection, and the ongoing challenges facing the Bay’s recovery.
Experts participating include scientists from:
- Florida International University
- University of Miami
- Nova Southeastern University
- The Everglades Foundation
- Miami-Dade County’s Department of Regulatory and Economic Resources, Division of Environmental Resources Management
Together, they will review current conditions in the Bay and discuss environmental impacts such as coral bleaching, seagrass decline, and other observed trends.
Commissioner Micky Steinberg, Chair of the Biscayne Bay Watershed Management Advisory Board (BBWMAB), will also attend.
Panelists will present accomplishments made over the past five years and share a roadmap for the next phase of restoration. Residents are encouraged to register and attend to learn how they can help protect the Bay, including avoiding fertilizer during the rainy season, reducing single-use plastics, and picking up litter and pet waste.
