Miami-Dade County Mayor announces $94 million in FAA grants for MIA modernization projects
(MIAMI, September 30, 2025) – Miami International Airport (MIA) has been awarded a combined $94 million in grant funding from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to accelerate critical improvements as part of its landmark Future-Ready Modernization in Action (M.I.A.) maintenance and capital program.
On September 23, the FAA announced a $70 million Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant for MIA, just one week after the airport received $24 million in Airport Infrastructure Grant (AIG) funding. These back-to-back investments will help fund key projects within MIA’s multi-year, multi-billion-dollar modernization program, which is designed to strengthen infrastructure, enhance passenger experience, and meet the demands of record-breaking travel growth.
“MIA is the gateway to our community and one of our greatest economic engines, so securing nearly $100 million in FAA grants in just two weeks – the highest amount of federal funds awarded to any airport nationwide this year - is a tremendous win for Miami-Dade County,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “This historic investment will help us modernize MIA to meet the needs of our growing county, create good-paying jobs, and ensure that our airport remains resilient, sustainable, and competitive for generations to come - bringing us closer to delivering a world-class, future-ready airport that will make travelers and our community proud.”
The Future-Ready Modernization in Action program is a $9 billion capital improvement plan to transform nearly every corner of MIA over the next decade.
Major initiatives include:
- Airfield and roadway enhancements: Improving runways, taxiways, and road access to accommodate growing passenger and cargo operations.
- Terminal modernization and expansion: Upgrading concourses, gates, and passenger boarding bridges to improve efficiency and comfort.
- Sustainability and resiliency upgrades: Incorporating energy-efficient systems, storm-hardening measures, and renewable energy infrastructure.
- Parking and mobility improvements: Renovating parking garages and integrating new mobility solutions for seamless access.
“These FAA grants will support projects critical to MIA’s mission to remain one of the world’s leading global gateways for passengers and cargo while preparing for future aviation demands,” said Ralph Cutié, MIA Director and CEO.
