Mayor Daniella Levine Cava urges Florida Congressional Delegation to protect Miami-Dade residents amid federal government shutdown
Today, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava sent a letter to the Florida Congressional Delegation calling for urgent bipartisan action to protect residents and families as the federal government shutdown continues to threaten essential programs and services.
In her letter, Mayor Levine Cava underscores the severe and immediate risks posed to millions of residents who depend on federal funding for healthcare, food assistance, and housing, and urges Congressional leaders to:
- Extend federal healthcare subsidies through the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
- Utilize federal resources and emergency funding to sustain the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other vital programs.
Four of the top five congressional districts in the nation for Affordable Care Act enrollment are located in or include parts of Miami-Dade County, while nearly a quarter—24%—of all Miami-Dade households rely on SNAP benefits, emphasizing the community’s deep reliance on federal safety-net services that protect public health and stability.
