Miami-Dade Mayor to unveil winners of Public Innovation Challenge to optimize waste
diversion and drive Zero Waste goals
Miami-Dade County and the Miami-Dade Innovation Authority will announce winners of
the Fifth Public Innovation Challenge, highlighting tech-driven solutions that enhance
recycling, waste diversion, and sustainability across the County.
<p>On Saturday, November 15, 2025, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, alongside
the Miami-Dade Innovation Authority (MDIA), the Miami-Dade Department of Solid Waste
Management (DSWM), and the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA), will
announce the winners of MDIA’s <a href="https://www.mdia.miami/waste">Fifth
Public Innovation Challenge</a>: <em>Propelling Waste Diversion and Sustainable Solutions
Across Miami-Dade County</em>.</p>
<p>This challenge seeks solutions that harness the power of technology to improve
recycling and waste diversion efforts like organic waste and clean yard trash reuse.
Education and public engagement are key components in developing the County’s
Solid Waste Master Plan – a comprehensive roadmap that outlines our path forward
to recycling and reducing waste, and it promotes repurposing for a more sustainable
and greener community.</p>

Media registration/set-up begins at 9:30 a.m. and the event begins at 10 a.m. Reporters
will have the opportunity to speak with the startup founders, MDIA representatives
and County officials, including Mayor Levine Cava, DSWM Director Dr. Aneisha Daniel,
and MDIA President Leigh-Ann Buchanan. Parking is available along the dirt road inside
the Old South Dade Landfill. Signage will help guide attendees. Closed-toe shoes are
required due to uneven terrain, and flat shoes (no heels) are highly encouraged.

Providing our customers with exceptional waste collection, recycling and disposal
services.
<p>Providing our customers with exceptional waste collection, recycling, disposal
and mosquito control services that protect, preserve and improve our environment and
the quality of life in our community.</p>
<p>Solid Waste Management provides waste collection and recycling services to unincorporated
Miami-Dade County and the cities of Aventura, Cutler Bay, Doral, Miami Gardens, Miami
Lakes, Opa-locka, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, Sunny Isles Beach and Sweetwater. Curbside
recycling services are also provided to the following cities that have inter-local
agreements with Miami-Dade County: El Portal, Florida City, Medley, Miami Beach, Miami
Springs, North Bay Village, South Miami, Virginia Gardens and West Miami.</p>
<p>Waste collection is provided twice each week and recycling every other week. Customers
can schedule two bulky waste pickups each calendar year and have access to 13 Neighborhood
Trash and Recycling Centers and two Home Chemical Collection Centers.</p>
<p>Solid Waste Management owns and operates three landfills and three Regional Transfer
Stations for waste disposal.</p>
<p>Permits for general haulers, landscapers and tire generators are also issued as
part of the services.</p>
<p>Other responsibilities under <a href="https://library.municode.com/fl/miami_-_dade_county/codes/code_of_ordinances?nodeId=PTIIICOOR_CH15SOWAMA"
target="_blank" rel="noopener">Chapter 15 of the Miami-Dade County Code</a> include
issuing warnings and citations for waste-related code violations. </p>
<p>Solid Waste Management also provides countywide mosquito prevention and control
services.</p>
