Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office Deputy-Involved Shooting in South District - Update
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating a shooting involving a sergeant from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO).
On today’s date, at approximately 7:40 p.m., MDSO received a 9-1-1 call of a Hispanic male pointing a firearm at citizens in the area of SW 216 Street and SW 122 Avenue.
An MDSO sergeant was first to arrive in the area and observed the subject in a minivan. The sergeant ordered the subject to show his hands, which the subject refused to do. There was an exchange of gunfire and the subject was struck.
Additional MDSO units arrived shortly thereafter and assisted with lifesaving measures. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) responded and transported the subject to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
No deputies nor any civilians were injured in this incident.
The investigation continues.
UPDATE #1:
As your Sheriff, I remain committed to upholding the principles of transparency, accountability, and public trust.
Today, the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office is releasing a Critical Incident Video. We recognize that incidents of this nature raise questions and concerns within our community, and I believe the public has the right to see critical incidents involving law enforcement.
While a thorough investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement is still underway, releasing this footage ensures everyone sees the sequence of events as they unfolded.
Regardless of the outcome, my commitment is clear, to be transparent with our community, to hold ourselves to the highest standards, and to continue working every day to earn and maintain your trust.
