Conservation Workshop Series: “Watch and Walk: A screening by Miami-Dade Public Library System and Latino Outdoors”

Visitor Center Theater.
As part of the Conservation Workshop on Sunday, May 10th, join us for a screening by the Miami-Dade Public Library System and Latino Outdoors. The Miami-Dade Public Library holds one of the remaining, circulating 16mm film collections. The collection dates back to 1956 and was developed to be a teaching collection designed to be used for public programming. AV CLUB is an ongoing program of curated 16mm short film screenings designed to provoke discussion, create awareness of unique library resources held by the Special Collections Division of the Miami-Dade Public Library System and generate enthusiasm for learning and research.
At this event we will watch Unconquered Indians (28 min.) a 1974 documentary produced by the Junior League of Miami. The film is a social study of the Seminole and Miccosukee Indians of South Florida. After a brief history of their settlement in the early 1800s, the film presents the problems of housing, education, employment and medical needs on the various reservations at 40-mile Bend, Big Cypress and Hollywood. Glimpses of schooling and headstart programs are shown, as well as views of the traditional and modern adaptations made by the tribes.
Concert featuring Artist-in-Residence Susana Behar
Sunday, May 17, 6 p.m. –7:30 p.m.
Tickets $30 available for purchase on Eventbrite.com
As part of her ongoing residency at the Deering Estate, award-winning vocalist Susana Behar will present a Sephardic music concert on Sunday, May 17th in celebration of Jewish American Heritage Month and Mother’s Day. An internationally recognized interpreter of Sephardic song, Susana has dedicated a significant part of her career to the preservation and performance of this rich musical tradition, appearing in festivals and concert series across the United States and abroad, including last year’s performance at the Library of Congress.
This special performance will showcase the rich musical legacy of the Sephardic diaspora, bringing together songs of love, longing, and cultural memory in Ladino, the historic language of Sephardic Jews. Deeply engaging and uplifting, the concert celebrates tradition while paying tribute to Susana’s maternal heritage, inviting audiences to experience the beauty, diversity and emotional depth of this timeless repertoire.
Susana Behar will be joined by a band of extraordinary musicians, with Michel Gonzalez on guitar and musical direction.
