Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava to host ribbon-cutting at WASD South District Wastewater Treatment Plant

Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava, joined by County Commissioner Danielle Cohen Higgins (D8), Miami-Dade County Chief Utilities and Regulatory Services Officer Roy Coley, and Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department (WASD) Director Jay J. Fink, P.E., will host a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, 2026, to celebrate the completion of the new Thickening and Dewatering Facilities at WASD’s South District Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The project is part of WASD’s historic $8.9 billion Capital Improvement Program (CIP) and, together with similar improvements at the Central District Wastewater Treatment Plant, represents the largest completed construction contract in the Department’s history. With a combined investment exceeding $300 million, these upgrades modernize the wastewater treatment process by using advanced centrifuge technology that significantly accelerates the removal of water from the waste. 

By reducing processing time from days to seconds, the new facilities improve operational performance, lower costs, and enhance odor control. The project also supports water quality improvements, helps protect Biscayne Bay, and strengthens the reliability of wastewater services for the community.
