Special Transportation Service (STS)

STS, disability services, special needs, travel-transportation public-transportation persons-with-disabilities apply-for, in-person-only, request-service People with disabilities unable to ride public transportation can request Special Transportation Service (STS) to make necessary trips. STS is a shared-ride public transportation service of Miami-Dade County in compliance with the complementary paratransit service provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990. STS offers door-to-door transportation service from the main entrance of pick-up to the main entrance of drop-off locations. The service operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and can be used throughout most of Miami-Dade County. Custom STS Program Enhancements The following enhancements have been implemented to improve the STS program's service and reliability: <ul> <li>Extended service hours for trip reservations: 6 a.m. – 6 p.m. Call 305-871-1111 / TTY Users: 800-955-8771 or 711</li> <li>Stand-by vehicles added to minimize service delays during peak times</li> <li>Personnel added to monitor service and minimize delays</li> <li>Negotiated pickup times - the ADA allows scheduling flexibility up to one hour before or after the requested time to improve operational efficiencies.</li> </ul>

Eligibility & Requirements Who is eligible for STS? <ul> <li>Miami-Dade County residents whose physical or mental disability prevents them from using accessible public transportation (Metrobus, Metrorail, or Metromover) independently.</li> <li>Miami-Dade County residents with temporary disabilities are eligible for STS during the period of their disability.</li> <li>People with disabilities from out-of-town that are presumed eligible under ADA jurisdiction.</li> </ul>

Custom How to Apply Print and <a href="https://www.miamidade.gov/resources/transportation_publicworks/documents/pdfs/misc/STS_Application.pdf" target="_blank" rel="noopener">complete the application</a>. A Florida Licensed Physician must complete and sign the STS application. Custom Fees The fee is $3.50 per one-way trip, as well as for companions. Personal Care Attendants ride free and must be pre-certified. Prepaid vouchers can also be purchased in advance by calling the STS Reservations Line.  Certified STS riders can use Metrobus and Metrorail free of charge.

Custom Appeals If denied eligibility, you can appeal by mail within 60 days to the Office of Civil Rights and Labor Relations. Submitting additional medical documentation does not constitute a request for appeal.

Custom STS Quarterly Meetings The Paratransit Division will host a public meeting, available both in-person and virtually, to provide updates on service performance and upcoming initiatives and to receive public input, including concerns, feedback or commendations regarding Paratransit STS services. Custom STS Application for County Visitors <ul> <li>ADA eligible visitors will be served for 21 days during a 365-day period (one year).  If you need service for more than 21 days, you must apply for eligibility as a Miami-Dade County resident.</li> <li>Please read the “Eligibility & Requirements” section for more details on the eligibility and requirements for the out-of-town visitor.</li> <li>The service offered to visitors is the same as that provided to residents, meaning the service is door-to-door, shared-ride paratransit.</li> </ul>
