Request a Dog or Cat Tag Transfer

You can transfer the ownership of a dog or cat from one person to another at the Animal Services Pet Adoption and Protection Center. A completed Transfer of Ownership form is required if a dog or cat is being transferred to another county in Florida. As a result, your pet's Miami-Dade account will be closed.

Dog or Cat Tags

The dog's or cat's old tag number will be transferred and valid until its expiration date. A new tag will be required only if the existing tag has expired.
If the new owner decides to purchase a new tag prior to the old tag's expiration, the fee will not be prorated. Full price must be paid.

To transfer a dog’s or cat's license tag to a new owner you will need to provide the following documentation:
- Both new and old owners must appear in person at the Animal Services Pet Adoption and Protection Center
  - A notarized transfer of ownership letter from current owner and
  - Copies of each person’s driver's license or valid State photo ID
To update the account:
- If owner has died and close relative (father, daughter, mother, son) wants to transfer ownership, advise them of the age requirement (18) and
- A copy of the person’s death certificate along with ID will be required.
