Safety Tips: Boating Safety
Recreational boating is a great way to enjoy the water, but safety must come first. According to the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), over 500 people die each year in boating accidents, with thousands more injured. The leading cause of death? Drowning. In fact, 87 percent of drowning victims were not wearing a life jacket.
The top five factors that contribute to boating accidents include:
- Operator inattention – Failing to stay aware of surroundings
- Improper lookout – Not keeping an eye out for hazards
- Lack of boating knowledge – Inexperienced or untrained operators
- Excessive speed – Going too fast for conditions
- Mechanical failure – Engine or system malfunctions
A staggering 75 percent of boating deaths occur on vessels operated by individuals who have never taken a boater education course.
