Safety Tips: Roadside Emergencies

• Know your limits. If you are uncomfortable handling even minor car issues, consider joining a reliable roadside assistance service. Always have a charged mobile phone with you to call for help
• Assemble an emergency kit. Keep flares, reflective triangles, flashlights with extra batteries, a basic tool set, gloves, water and a first aid kit in your vehicle

• Move to safety. If possible, avoid stopping in the middle of the road. As soon as you notice a problem, turn on your hazard lights and carefully steer toward the shoulder or a safe location away from traffic. Call for assistance immediately
• Increase visibility by keeping your hazard lights on, and if it’s safe, raise your car’s hood, as this signals to others that your vehicle is disabled
• If you have flares or reflective markers, place them in a line extending at least 200 feet behind your car, starting from the vehicle and moving toward oncoming traffic
• Stay safe. If there is a secure area away from traffic, exit your car and wait there for help. However, if it is safer to remain inside, keep your seat belt on and stay alert

• Never attempt repairs in a dangerous location. If your vehicle is stuck in an unsafe spot, do not try to fix it yourself. Instead, call for professional assistance
• In case of fire, get out immediately. Do not attempt to locate the source of the fire. Ensure all occupants exit the vehicle, move to a safe distance, and call 911
• Be extra cautious at night. Visibility is reduced, and other drivers may not be as alert. Stay as far away from traffic lanes as possible and assume that passing vehicles may not see you
• Respect highway dangers. Even if you have experience handling car issues, do not underestimate the risks of being stranded on a busy road. Prioritize safety and seek professional help when needed
