Dr. Benjamin Mathis, M.D. - Chief Medical Examiner

Dr. Benjamin Mathis serves as Chief Medical Examiner and Director of the Miami-Dade County Medical Examiner Department. He joined the department in 2012 and was promoted to Deputy Chief Medical Examiner in 2022 before being appointed Chief Medical Examiner. A board-certified forensic pathologist, he provided leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic and the Surfside Building collapse, exemplifying the department’s mission to deliver accurate, timely, dignified, and compassionate death investigation services.

He is board-certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, with subspecialty certification in Forensic Pathology, and holds a medical degree from the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. He also plays a key role in training forensic pathology fellows and associate medical examiners across the nation.
