Bravery and Professionalism at TGK

The Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department is proud to recognize and commend Corporal Fritz Charles, Officer Hansmid Diaz, and Officer Ronell Faison for their outstanding bravery, professionalism, and decisive action during a critical incident that occurred on Friday, April 11, 2025, in Unit K63 of the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center (TGKCC).
At approximately 9:30 a.m., an inmate was observed standing on the second-floor railing above the officer's desk, threatening to jump. Recognizing the gravity of the situation, staff quickly began preparing the area with mattresses in anticipation of a potential fall.
Amid the tense and potentially tragic moment, the three officers sprang into action. Corporal Charles, Officer Diaz, and Officer Faison each selflessly climbed over the staircase railing to join the inmate on the narrow ledge, risking their own safety to preserve the life of another.
Utilizing their Crisis Intervention Training, they worked collaboratively to build rapport and trust with the inmate. Their calm demeanor, verbal de-escalation skills, and coordinated teamwork ultimately led to the inmate complying with their commands and safely returning to the secure area. The inmate was then escorted to the clinic for medical evaluation.
The courageous actions of Corporal Charles, Officer Diaz, and Officer Faison were instrumental in preventing a tragedy. Their swift, composed, and compassionate response exemplifies the highest standards of the department and the very best of public service. Their actions not only safeguarded the life of the inmate but also reaffirmed the strength, integrity, and humanity at the core of our profession.
Each of the officers demonstrated what it truly means to serve with honor. Your selfless dedication and ability to respond effectively in a life-threatening crisis are deeply appreciated by your peers, supervisors, and the Miami-Dade community at large.
Thank you for being exemplary representatives of the Miami-Dade Corrections and Rehabilitation Department.
