Local Hero at the Heart of the Community

For many, a facilities manager is someone who works behind the scenes-keeping the lights on, the doors open, and the wheels turning. But for Mitch Alusma, Facilities Manager at the Marshall L. Davis African Heritage Cultural Arts Center, the role means much more. It means protecting people, responding in crisis, and being a steady, unseen force for good.
Just last week, Mitch became a true local hero when he sprang into action to save a life. A citizen sitting at a bus bench just outside the Center went into a seizure. Without hesitation, Mitch rushed to assist, immediately calling emergency services and staying by the individual's side until paramedics arrived. His quick thinking and calm demeanor during a critical moment made all the difference-and may have saved a life.
But those who work alongside Mitch weren’t surprised.
“This is who Mitch is,” said Marshall L. Davis, Center Director. “He’s always the first to step in, the last to leave, and the one making sure everyone else is safe and supported.”
From ensuring that every child gets picked up and dropped off on time for the afterschool program, to monitoring the air conditioning system, restrooms, and building maintenance, Mitch runs the Center with precision and heart. He coordinates driver schedules, supports staff with transporting equipment, and has even helped build entire theatrical sets for theatre and showcase performances.
He’s also a vigilant guardian of safety-monitoring security cameras daily, coordinating with Green Light Miami-Dade, and most recently, organizing a life skills training session on Surviving an Active Threat for staff.
“His commitment is unmatched,” said Davis. “You might see him fixing a light one minute, then helping a parent carry supplies the next. He never says no when someone needs help.”
What truly sets Mitch apart is not just his ability to manage a facility-but his ability to lead with compassion, courage, and consistency. Whether it's saving a life, preventing problems before they arise, or simply being a dependable presence for children, parents, and coworkers alike, Mitch’s impact is felt daily.
In a world where quiet heroes often go unrecognized, Mitch stands tall. He is more than a facilities manager-he is the backbone of the Center, and a living example of what it means to go above and beyond.

About Us
The People and Internal Operations Department ensures efficient County operations and fosters a thriving workforce by integrating internal services and human resources management.
