Fallen officers honored

Miami-Dade Police Department (MDPD) Interim Director George A. Perez, along with MDPD Honor Guard members Officer Angel Rodriguez and Alejandro Vazquez Jr. place the thin blue line flag at the gravesite of Sergeant Jermaine Brown who was killed in an ATV crash while conducting an enforcement detail as the result of community complaints of illegal activity along a canal path in 2018.

On Sunday, May 1, 2022, Miami-Dade Police Department kicked off Project HERO, which stands for Honoring Every Resting Officer killed in the line of duty in Miami-Dade County. The day began with a prayer before dispersing to the grave sites throughout the County.

The Police Officer Assistance Trust initiated Project HERO in May 2011. The project's goal is to honor all law enforcement officers (County, state and federal) killed in the line of duty at their final resting location. It is important to recognize and honor those who have sacrificed their lives for the sake of keeping our communities safe. Officers across Miami-Dade County are honored during the month of May with an American/Thin Blue Line flag that is placed at each grave or crypt. Grave markers in the shape of police badges and labeled Police Officer proudly hold the flag in place.

Agency representatives go out to the respective grave sites with Honor Guard, salute, and place marker with dignity and respect.
