Lending a helping hand

Assisting others is nothing new to Tanglia Hunt, a Toll Collector in the Cruise Operations Division at the Seaport. For the past 16 and a half years, Ms. Hunt has been the first person to welcome cruise passengers to the Port of Miami and the last person to bid them farewell. Though she didn’t expect to be in this role, Ms. Hunt has embraced it wholeheartedly. “When I applied for the position of Toll Collector 16 years ago, I had no idea it would be at the Port of Miami. I thought the role of Toll Collector would mean being on the highways, but when I interviewed, and was offered the job, I decided to give it a chance and I have embraced it ever since”.
Known for her readiness to help others, Ms. Hunt is always ready to assist – whether it’s a cruise passenger or a colleague in need. Most recently, Ms. Cassandra Colon shared how she was having difficulties with the computer system used to check out cruise passengers. Without hesitation, Ms. Hunt came to her aid. “Ms. Hunt has been an ANGEL for me whom since day one of my onboarding in this department has always told me if I ever need help or had any questions, she would be more than happy to assist me. These kind acts may appear insignificant to many but mean a lot to me,” recalled Colon.
Ms. Hunt’s act of kindness extends beyond her colleagues. One memorable instance involved an older cruise ship passenger she saw in distress. “I remember seeing someone approaching me panicked and sweating thinking his car had been stolen. I reassured him if he parked his car in the garage, then the car would be there. I was able to calm him down, walk him back to the garage and take the elevator floor by floor until we found it. The relief on his face when we found his car warmed my heart.”
When asked what motivates her to go out of your way to assist others, Ms. Hunt explained “I don’t do it for the recognition or to hold it as a future favor. I help others because I was there once too. I was new to the department, and there were people who went out of their way to help me. Now, I am just passing the baton so they can go help others."
When not providing exceptional customer service at the Port of Miami, Ms. Hunt enjoys traveling, relaxing, and spending time with her husband, two children, grandchildren, and parents. Ms. Colon sums it up best “you are an AMAZING person”.
Keep THRIVING Ms. Hunt!
