Tree Removal or Relocation Permits

Trees offer many benefits to our community. They help to increase the real estate value of a property and trees can reduce the air conditioning cost if located or planted in areas that provide shade to your home.

But trees also add an important environmental value to our community. They help to improve air quality and reduce flooding, not to mention that green spaces enhance the beauty of our neighborhoods. Trees play a vital role in the sequestration of carbon dioxide, which is a greenhouse gas and the leading contributor to global warming.

Unfortunately, the tree canopy in Miami-Dade County is well below the national average when compared to similar metropolitan areas because we have lost thousands of trees to hurricanes, diseases such as laurel wilt, and development. Therefore, it is imperative that we protect, preserve, and maintain the trees in our community as well as plant the right trees in the right place if you have room within your property.

A tree removal/relocation permit is required for the removal or relocation of any tree within Miami-Dade County not specifically exempt under the Environmental Code of Miami-Dade County.

Contact the Miami-Dade County Tree Program at 305-372-6574 or email us at [email protected] for information on County tree requirements, including those within municipalities and for permitted work:

  • County-designated Natural Forest Communities
  • Trees protected by specimen tree covenants in favor of Miami-Dade County
  • Removal or relocation of trees on County-owned land or County rights-of-way
  • Work relating to trees within municipal jurisdictions that do not have their own tree protection ordinance

For questions or work involving mangroves or within wetlands, please see the contact information below:

  • Mangroves - Coastal Resources Section at 305-372-6575
  • Trees within wetlands - Wetland Resources Section at 305-372-6585

Prior authorization from Miami-Dade County is required for the above listed work, as well as for any tree removal or relocations within the unincorporated areas of Miami-Dade County.
