"Legacy" Deering Estate Coffee Table Book now available for sale from the Deering Estate Foundation
Legacy, a pictorial history of the Deering Estate is now available. This 116-page full color coffee table book beautifully captures the art, architecture, natural areas of Charles Deering’s Florida Estate. Presented by the 100 Ladies of Deering with a Foreword by Les Standiford and Introduction by Paul S. George Ph.D, this book will please history lovers, art lovers, nature lovers, and anyone who appreciates beautiful photography.
"This book represents an exciting and beautiful photo narrative of the Deering Estate, contributing to our community's institutional memory and sense of place. We are thankful for the support of the Deering Estate Foundation and 100 Ladies of Deering in this endeavor and for being our strongest ally, advocating for the Deering Estate through special projects such as Legacy. These thoughtful investments bring awareness to the conservation, preservation, and overall stewardship of the Deering Estate’s cultural and natural resources,” says Jennifer Tisthammer, Director, Deering Estate & Chief of Conservation, Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces.
The cover art by Curt Rosner is a stunning view of sunrise at the Deering Estate Boat Basin. Other photos capture the architecture of the Stone House and Richmond Cottage, extensive natural areas, and historical context of the site. Events at the Deering Estate are highlighted including programs for students, yoga, Vintage Auto Show, Seafood Festival, kayaking and more.
The book took several years to compile and curate. Lori Haas, Nancy Michelson and Barbara Bass of the 100 Ladies of Deering, affectionally known as the ‘Tres Amigas’, worked tirelessly with the coffee table book committee to bring the book to the public. “Our fondness for the Deering Estate and the passion to educate our community and beyond of the history and culture of this beautiful historical gem, guided us through the creation of Legacy.”
The 100 Ladies of Deering are working to place copies of Legacy in local branches of the Miami-Dade Public Library system that can be requested throughout the system, and in neighborhood school libraries. Copies at schools including Coral Reef Elementary, Dr. Henry E. Perrine Elementary, Palmetto Elementary, Southwood Middle, Palmetto High, Palmer Trinity, Westminster, and Whispering Pines Elementary will support the programming already taking place for students at the Deering Estate.
All proceeds from Legacy benefit the 100 Ladies of Deering in support of Charles and Marion Deering’s legacy of community, conservation and culture in South Florida.
Books can be ordered online and picked up during Deering Estate Foundation office hours or mailed for a small fee. Legacy will also be featured and available for purchase during the Miami Book Fair - Writer’s Row on November 17 & 18, 2023.
