First Responders Join Forces to Raise Autism Awareness at Fifth Annual Riding for the Cause Event

The event features bike rides of varying distances and a kids' bike safety segment, with proceeds benefiting autism service organizations. <p>As part of National Autism Acceptance Month, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) will join forces with Metro-Dade Firefighter's Local 1403, Miami-Dade Police, and other public safety agencies from across South Florida in support of autism awareness at the "Riding for the Cause" event on Saturday, April 13, 2024.</p> <p>Starting at the MDFR Training Facility located in Doral, FL, at 7 a.m., cyclists participating in the fifth annual Autism Bike Ride will choose between two different routes: a 40-mile ride through the streets of Miami-Dade County paced at 18-20 mph, and a shorter 12-mile ride through Doral, paced at 12-15 mph, for the more casual, but equally as important, supporters.</p> <p>There will also be a Kids' Bike Safety Event starting at 9 a.m., where children participating in the event can bring their bikes and get fitted with a new helmet, if they do not have one, to join the celebration safely. Kids will also have an opportunity to learn about bike safety.</p> <p>All proceeds raised at the event are donated to the University of Miami&rsquo;s Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) and Growing for Inclusion, two organizations that provide autism-related services to children and their families. We have response units dedicated to air rescue service, ocean rescue, fire and rescue operations, marine, hazardous materials (HazMat), urban search and rescue (US&amp;R), technical rescue, and venom response.</p> <p>Our rescue services include aero-medical transport to trauma centers and other medical facilities. Our air rescue helicopters are also used to perform search and rescue missions, and firefighting and reconnaissance operations involving large incidents, such as wildfires and major fires.</p> <p>We also have full-time and part-time professional lifeguards protecting Haulover and Crandon beaches.</p> <p>We support disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation needs.
