Miami-Dade Animal Services urges pet owners to include pets in emergency preparedness plan for hurricane season

With the NOAA National Weather Service forecast predicting above-normal hurricane activity for the 2024 hurricane season, Miami-Dade County Animal Services (Animal Services) is calling on all pet owners to ensure they have comprehensive plan in place that includes their pets and keeps their pets safe. Preparing for a hurricane can be stressful but taking proactive steps now can prevent last-minute panic and ensure the safety of all family members, including furry ones. Remember, wherever you go, they go – never leave your pets behind.

Pet Preparedness Checklist: 
1.    Identification: Ensure your pet has a collar with up-to-date ID tags. Microchipping is strongly recommended and should be current with your contact information.
2.    Emergency Kit: Assemble a pet emergency kit that includes:
•    At least a week's supply of food and water
•    Medications and medical records
•    A sturdy leash, harness, and carrier for safe transportation
•    A photo of your pet in case you get separated
•    Comfort items like toys or a blanket
3. Safe Shelter: Identify pet-friendly shelters in your area. Miami-Dade County offers several options, but spaces can fill up quickly. Know the locations and contact information in advance.
4.  Evacuation Plan: If you need to evacuate, take your pet with you. Never leave them behind. Map out your evacuation route and make sure your vehicle is ready for your pet’s comfort and safety.
5. Health and Wellness: Ensure your pet is up-to-date on vaccinations. Many shelters require proof of vaccination for entry.
6. Stay Informed: Monitor weather updates and follow instructions from local authorities. Have a battery-operated radio on hand to receive important alerts if the power goes out.
