Miami-Dade County Mayor reports on continued response to inclement weather and flooding
This morning, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava shared an update on the County’s response to the continued extreme weather and flooding experienced this week.
According to the latest report from the National Weather Service, although we are expecting less rain today, there is still potential for flooding due to ground saturation. A Flood Watch remains in effect for all of South Florida through this evening, and already flooded areas will be susceptible to additional flash flooding.
“We know this rain has especially affected the Northeast of our county – cities like Aventura, North Miami, North Miami Beach, Sunny Isles. We see you and we’re here for you,” said Mayor Levine Cava. “Our Fire Rescue heroes are canvassing flooded areas with trucks to help any residents that may still be stranded without access to a phone.”
In the meantime, Miami-Dade County Departments continue monitoring all canals, clearing debris from drains, removing fallen trees and branches from the streets, and keeping all pump stations fully operational.
Due to the heavy rainfall, Mayor Levine Cava declared a local state of emergency in Miami-Dade and activated the Emergency Operations Center at a Level 2 Partial Activation, out of an abundance of caution to coordinate key resources and respond faster to the community’s needs during or after the weather event, as well as to provide quicker access to state and federal resources.
Other updates from Miami-Dade County Departments:
- Most County offices remain open and providing services to residents.
- All Metrorail Parking Garages are available for free parking until 5 p.m. today
- All library branches are open, except the Bay Harbor Islands and Sunny Isles Beach branches that remain closed today.
- Zoo Miami reopened today.
- MetroBus, MetroRail and MetroMover are operating normally.
- Miami International Airport is operating normally as well and seeing fewer delayed and cancelled flights. However, parking garages are reaching maximum capacity due to delayed flights. Travelers are urged to call their airlines to confirm their flights and, if possible, find alternatives to get to the airport.
