PortMiami partners with Miami Dade College to promote Logistics and Transportation Training Program
As part of Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s Future Ready Plan, PortMiami has partnered with Miami Dade College (MDC) to develop, promote and enhance the workforce of the maritime industry, specifically in trade and logistics. PortMiami collaborated with MDC, providing information workshops highlighting classes leading to a Logistics and Transportation Specialist College Credit Certificate for maritime workers on Port. Starting fall 2024, a cohort of students working at the Port will take classes offered in the College’s transportation, distribution, and logistics career-cluster, along with Miami Dade College students. The coursework is broad-based to reflect the cross-functional relationships prevalent in supply chain management.
“This partnership with Miami Dade College is a transformative step forward for our community, offering maritime workers an invaluable opportunity to enhance their skills and advance their careers. By providing a pathway to earn college credentials in supply chain management, we are not only empowering individuals but also strengthening the backbone of our global economy,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. “The Logistics and Transportation Specialist certificate is more than just a piece of paper—it’s a gateway to good-paying jobs and long-term career growth in the maritime industry, unlocking new opportunities and driving innovation within the industry.
Students enrolled in the Logistics and Transportation Specialist College Credit Certificate program at MDC are exposed to related business practices such as standard operating procedures, negotiation techniques, planning, organizing, accounting concepts, purchasing, sustainability, warehousing, project management, quality control, import/export and asset management theory.
Once enrolled, students may apply for MDC’s Kick-Start Program, which covers 100% of tuition and fees and provides a $250 book stipend. Initially launched in 2020, the Kick-Start Program is a workforce training initiative for in-demand, high-wage occupations.
“Miami Dade College remains committed to serving as the workforce engine of the community,” said MDC President Madeline Pumariega. “We recognize the crucial role PortMiami plays in South Florida and look forward to working with Mayor Levine Cava to equip Port staff and future students with essential skills to thrive and compete in a global economy.”
