Luis Sierra [email protected] 305-471-1900 Departmental Award Departmental Award The Miami-Dade Police Department is pleased to announce that Officer John P. Deegan has been awarded the departmental Lifesaving Award, and selected as Distinguished Officer of the Month for August 2024. On Wednesday, June 12, 2024, at 9:25 p.m., Officer Deegan responded to a call at 14130 Southwest 260 Street, regarding a 63-year-old man who had accidentally shot himself with his Ruger .357 Magnum revolver. Upon arrival, Officer Deegan immediately began assessing the victim, who was barely conscious and breathing. Officer Deegan identified an entry wound to the inside of the victim’s left thigh, with a large exit wound to the opposite side of the leg. Recognizing that the victim was severely hemorrhaging, Officer Deegan applied a tourniquet to his leg and monitored his vital signs. Soon after, Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) arrived and took over life-saving measures. The victim was transported by MDFR to Jackson South Medical Center, in stable condition. Officer Deegan’s tremendous effort to help save the victim’s life reflects great credit upon himself and the Department.
