Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works unveils public art roadmap for Miami Art Week and extended service hours for Art Basel weekend
[Miami, FL] December 5, 2024 – With so many art lovers descending on our community to join the many local fans of the arts and culture during Miami Art Week, the Miami-Dade Department of Transportation and Public Works (DTPW) is excited to announce extended Metromover hours during Art Basel weekend and to unveil a comprehensive roadmap of world-class artwork displayed throughout the county’s transit system.
From Thursday, Dec. 5, through Sunday, Dec. 7, the Metromover will operate until 1 a.m., offering residents and visitors a safe, convenient, and stress-free way to explore the vibrant art scene during Art Basel weekend. With traffic and parking concerns eliminated, public transit becomes the ideal way to dive into the heart of the action while immersing yourself in the incredible art featured throughout our transit network.
"Art has the unique ability to inspire, connect, and elevate our daily lives," said Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. "By highlighting the incredible artwork along our transit systems, we’re not just moving people from place to place—we’re inviting them to engage with the beauty, creativity, and culture that makes Miami-Dade extraordinary. During Miami Art Week, we encourage everyone to experience the magic of art in motion.”
The Miami-Dade Art in Public Places program, part of the Department of Cultural Affairs, has long shaped the urban landscape of Miami-Dade with remarkable installations along the Metrorail and Metromover systems. From intricate mosaics to thought-provoking sculptures, these works of art transform everyday commutes into immersive cultural experiences.
The newly unveiled art roadmap guides riders to remarkable public art across the Metrorail and Metromover systems, including:
- Figures inspired by Greek mythology
- A neon sculpture over the Miami River
- A mural celebrating the tropics
- Crystalline designs reflecting marine life
- Benches crafted from recycled hurricane debris
- A ceramic mural by local high school students
- A giant red “M” and mosaics featuring the handprints of Miami residents
Public transit offers a seamless way to navigate Miami during one of its most exciting weeks, and the expanded Metromover hours make it even easier to explore the County’s art scene. Whether traveling to a gallery opening, an Art Basel exhibit, or a pop-up installation, riders can make their journey part of the artistic experience.
