Miami-Dade County’s Comprehensive Water Conservation Program awarded Best in Class
Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department’s (WASD) continuous commitment to water conservation was recently recognized by the Florida Section American Water Works Association (FSAWWA).
The organization awarded WASD’s Comprehensive Water Conservation Program the Best in Class for FSAWWA Water Conservation Awards for Excellence due to its innovative and outstanding achievements in water efficiency in the state of Florida.
"I congratulate our Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department on this remarkable achievement," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. "This award highlights WASD’s exceptional conservation efforts, as well as the creativity and dedication of the team in delivering programs and messaging that empower our community to help preserve this vital natural resource, because #waterislife.”
WASD’s Water Comprehensive Conservation Program includes a variety of initiatives that promote a water-saving ethic among residents, visitors, and businesses. Since its debut in 2007, water demand has significantly decreased through the use of the indoor and outdoor conservation rebate programs and the implementation of the two day per week landscape irrigation practice. The average resident’s per capita water use rate has decreased by 21 gallons per day (gpd) in the last 17 years from 153.3 gpd to 132.47 gpd.
“Our Conservation Division works hard to develop initiatives and strategies that positively affect the reduction of water consumption,” said WASD Interim Director Amanda Kinnick. “This successful program fulfills the County’s goal to use water efficiently and confirms that water conservation is a sustainable and economical method to plan for future water supply and account for projected water demands for our community.”
The department was again recognized later in the ceremony, for its values-based image and marketing campaign #WaterIsLife, which earned an honorable mention for helping increase awareness of the value of water. The campaign’s mission is to engage residents and customers by strengthening their connections with water and highlighting each person’s unique experiences with water, which promotes an appreciation and realization for the value of water and how the utility works around the clock to provide this essential resource and service.
It is the priority of the Miami-Dade Water and Sewer Department to provide safe, reliable service to its customers. For additional information about Department services and programs, visit the WASD website.
