Mayor Daniella Levine Cava signs pledge designating Miami-Dade County as a “Stigma-Free” Workplace
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Mayor Daniella Levine Cava signed a pledge yesterday officially designating Miami-Dade County as a "Stigma Free” workplace, reaffirming her commitment to fostering a supportive environment that promotes emotional well-being for all County employees. The Stigma Free Pledge is a nationwide initiative aimed at eliminating the stigma surrounding mental health. By signing the pledge, Miami-Dade County is joining a growing number of communities and organizations committed to creating a more inclusive and understanding approach to mental health.
“As a social worker myself, I know it’s vital that we not only talk about mental health but also take action to create spaces where people feel supported and safe to express their struggles," said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. "We often say that our workforce is our greatest asset, and we mean it. It’s not just about the work they do, it’s about who they are. Their health, their peace of mind, their ability to show up fully every day, and the freedom to ask for help when they need it. That is how we keep our community healthy and safe in the 305."
For the signing, Mayor Levine Cava was joined by Chief Community Services Officer Cathy Burgos, licensed clinical social worker with over 25 years of experience in the field of mental health, and Susan Holtzman, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) for the Miami office, as well as representatives from the People and Internal Operations Department (PIOD), County employees, mental health professionals, and advocates.
“Creating a stigma-free workplace starts with leadership that prioritizes mental health as essential to overall well-being,” said Cathy Burgos, Chief Community Services Officer. “When employees know they are seen, valued, and supported—especially in their most vulnerable moments—we cultivate a healthier workforce that is compassionate and in turn a more resilient community.”
In the weeks ahead, the County is taking concrete steps to build on today’s commitment. Mayor Levine Cava will attend NAMI’s Walk 2025 as a partner and proud supporter on Saturday, May 10, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at LoanDepot Park, home of the Miami Marlins. The walk is part of the County's ongoing efforts to raise awareness and funds to support mental health advocacy, education, and support services in the community. Later this month, Susan Holtzman will be offering the Stigma Free training to County personnel. Throughout the rest of the year, the County will roll out the full one-hour Stigma Free training to all County employees.
“Together, we can raise awareness, create understanding, and work toward breaking down the barriers that prevent people from seeking the help they need,” said Susan Holtzman, CEO of NAMI. “This walk is an opportunity to show support for those affected by mental health conditions and to continue the conversation on how we can create healthier communities.”
This initiative is part of Miami-Dade County’s broader focus on enhancing employee wellness and promoting mental health awareness across the community.
