Vice Chairman Kionne L. McGhee Leads Effort: Miami-Dade County One Vote Away from Historic CBO Trust Fund
Permanent funding model set to safeguard nonprofits and community-based organizations for generations
Today, the Miami-Dade County Commission took a major vote to move closer to establishing the Community-Based Organization (CBO) Trust Fund, bringing the County just one vote away from creating a historic, permanent funding source that will sustain nonprofits and community-based organizations for generations.
The Trust Fund, championed by Vice Chairman Kionne L. McGhee, will ensure that the invaluable work of CBOs—providing critical human and social services—remains sustainable into the future. By setting aside a small percentage of eligible County purchases, the Trust Fund creates a reliable stream of support for the organizations that form the backbone of our neighborhoods.
Amanda Altman, CEO of Kristi House, praised the new Trust Fund:
“This Trust Fund represents a model for the future. Nonprofits and community-based organizations are often called to do the most with the least. With this dedicated resource, we can continue protecting, healing, and empowering the most vulnerable in our community—not just today, but for decades to come.”
Vice Chairman Kionne L. McGhee emphasized the urgency and responsibility of this effort:
“Every single day, our CBOs and nonprofits are on the frontlines—fighting poverty, lifting families, and saving lives. Too often, their hard work and resources are stretched thin. With this Trust Fund, we are saying loud and clear: your work matters, and we will preserve it. This is about honoring their sacrifice, safeguarding their mission, and ensuring that the people of Miami-Dade are never left behind.”
This ordinance mirrors the County’s legacy of creating trust funds to address critical needs—such as the Affordable Housing Trust Fund—and positions Miami-Dade as a national leader in sustainable nonprofit funding models.
The Miami-Dade CBO Trust Fund is more than policy. It is a promise: that the future of our communities will be built on the shoulders of those who dedicate their lives to service, and that their work will endure in perpetuity.
