Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office Deputy-Involved Shooting
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating a shooting involving a deputy from the Miami-Dade Sheriff's Office (MDSO).
According to investigators, an off-duty MDSO deputy identified a subject, considered to be armed and dangerous, wanted by Pembroke Pines Police Department for a Double Homicide that occurred last week and requested emergency back-up. The subject fled on foot, ran across the Florida Turnpike, jumped into a canal, swam across it, and climbed up a tree.
Additional deputies responded to the area and began to plead with the subject to come down. The subject refused to demonstrate cooperative behavior and was making erratic movements. At one point the subject gestured towards his waistband, as if attempting to reach for something, and a deputy discharged his service weapon, striking the subject in the lower, left arm.
With the assistance of the MDSO Special Response Team (SRT) the subject was subsequently taken into custody. Deputies provided life-saving measures before Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR) responded and airlifted him to HCA Aventura Hospital in stable condition. No deputies nor any civilians were injured in this incident.
The investigation continues.
