Statement from Mayor Levine Cava and Commissioner Regalado on future of the Miami Seaquarium
Today, The Dolphin Company announced a new agreement with Terra Group, a South Florida-based development company, to assume the lease of the Miami Seaquarium to renovate and modernize the property for the benefit of the animals in their care, the dedicated employees, and the residents and visitors of Miami-Dade. Once the agreement is approved by the United States Bankruptcy Court, it will be presented to the Board of County Commissioners for approval.
Below is a joint statement from Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava and District 7 Commissioner Raquel Regalado:
“This agreement represents a major step forward for Miami-Dade County, opening a new chapter in marine life education and Biscayne Bay preservation. It will also create a vibrant community destination where residents and visitors alike can enjoy the Bay, access boating opportunities, and experience family-friendly entertainment and amenities. Additionally, it continues to preserve our natural resources and prioritize our commitment to environmental resiliency.
Under the current administration, Miami-Dade has taken decisive steps to protect the welfare of the animals at the Seaquarium. This began with an amendment to the lease which allowed the County to inspect the facility and provided stricter requirements for animal welfare. When concerns were raised about The Dolphin Company’s ability to ensure proper animal welfare, the County responded by initiating a year-long eviction process.
As this agreement advances toward full approval, we remain committed to ensuring that the transition is safe and orderly, with the highest priority placed on the welfare of the animals under their care. Our ultimate goal is to protect the animals at the Miami Seaquarium while creating opportunities for future generations to learn about marine life and enjoy some of our community’s most treasured natural spaces.”
