Commissioner Natalie Milian Orbis today announced that Miami-Dade County will save $3 million on its beach maintenance contract following her efforts to strengthen the County’s procurement process and promote open competition
“Our beaches are among our greatest natural and economic treasures,” said Commissioner Orbis. “Protecting them responsibly and managing taxpayer dollars wisely go hand in hand. By encouraging dialogue and transparency in the contracting process, we achieved meaningful savings that will go right back into the community.”
Commissioner Orbis emphasized that managing sargassum is a countywide priority. “Clean and healthy beaches are essential to our tourism industry, which supports jobs and small businesses across every corner of Miami-Dade, including my district,” she said. “When we protect our coastline, we protect our economy.”
She also noted that every Commission meeting is, in effect, a budget hearing — a time to safeguard public funds and demand accountability. “Every dollar we approve has a direct impact on families and neighborhoods,” she said. “We have to treat each decision with the same care and discipline we would use with our own household budgets.”
The measure ensured that County funds are used effectively and that procurement decisions continue to serve the best interests of residents and local businesses. These savings will help support essential services and preserve the beauty of Miami-Dade’s coastline for everyone to enjoy.
