Miami-Dade County establishes Miami-Dade 250: We Are America Celebration Advisory Committee to lead local commemoration of America’s Semiquincentennial
Today, Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava announced the creation of the Miami-Dade 250: We Are America Celebration Advisory Committee, a new initiative that will guide and elevate the County’s participation in the nationwide commemoration of the United States’ 250th anniversary in 2026.
“In 2026, our nation will mark 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, and Miami-Dade is proud to join communities across the country in celebrating this historic milestone,” said Mayor Levine Cava. “As a dynamic and diverse community that serves as a gateway to the Americas, Miami-Dade has a unique story to tell—one defined by unity, resilience, innovation, and shared values. This Advisory Committee will help us honor our history while showcasing the vibrant, inclusive future we continue to build together.”
The Semiquincentennial will be commemorated in thousands of communities nationwide. Under the Mayor’s leadership, the We Are America Celebration Advisory Committee will play a central role in shaping a meaningful and forward-looking celebration rooted in the county’s cultural richness and long-standing commitment to civic engagement.
The Advisory Committee will develop a comprehensive framework for events, activities, and legacy projects that will allow residents and visitors alike to participate in this once-in-a-generation milestone.
The We Are America Celebration Advisory Committee is charged with making recommendations as to the following:
- Developing a countywide plan of events, programs, public activations, and educational initiatives to honor the 250th anniversary;
- Coordinating with state and federal partners, cultural institutions, municipalities, and community organizations;
- Encouraging civic engagement, historical reflection, and cultural expression across all neighborhoods;
- Identifying funding opportunities and partnerships to support celebrations and legacy projects; and
- Ensuring Miami-Dade’s efforts align with national commemoration activities led by the U.S. Semiquincentennial Commission.
The Advisory Committee will include a diverse range of perspectives and will be composed of representatives appointed by:
- Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava
- Chairman of the Board of County Commissioners
- President of the Miami-Dade League of Cities
- Chair of the Miami-Dade Legislative Delegation
- Chair of the Miami-Dade School Board
- Greater Miami Convention & Visitors Bureau
- HistoryMiami
- South Florida AFL-CIO
- Chair of the Miami-Dade Youth Commission or designee
The Office of the Mayor will provide staff support and will begin coordinating with the appointing organizations in December to confirm committee members. The Advisory Committee’s first meeting will be scheduled for January 2026.
